How To Decide Between A 15 Inch Active Loudspeaker And A Passive Option

A 15 inch active loudspeaker can be a great addition to our set of sound equipment. However, there are also those who will find themselves concerned about the lack of a passive loudspeaker. Knowing the differences between the two is what allows us to make a much more informed decision.

This process can be confusing and we are here to lay all of that confusion to rest once and for all. Without further ado, let's have a closer look at the 15 inch active loudspeaker and the differences between this option and a passive one.

Explaining The Active Loudspeaker

Let's say that we have decided to purchase a 15 inch active loudspeaker to handle our needs. What is the difference between this option and a passive one? Have we made the right choice? In order to know the answer to this question, we must first know what an active loudspeaker actually entails. The word active is actually used to refer to the system itself and the crossover components.

This is why the word active is usually used as a synonym in these cases. When we refer to a loudspeaker of any kind as an active one, we are typically referring to the crossover components. These types of speakers are often purchased for home theater and home entertainment purposes. The active crossover components do not always have to be stored within the speaker itself either.

The larger the setting, the more likely the components are to remain on the outside. It is believed that these speakers are a far better choice than a passive option because each and every one of the components was manufactured with the other in mind. This is the type of advantage that we simply cannot enjoy when we choose a passive loudspeaker instead.

What About a Passive Option?

There are those who may wish to choose a passive loudspeaker option instead of the active ones and this is something that should never take place without the proper research. While there are high end options available that grant us access to high end components, this does not mean that we are able to avoid the drawbacks associated with these models.

For example, many buyers do not know that these loudspeakers will actually dissipate heat. Because of this, much of amplification power is lost in translation. In fact, we may lose as much as 30 percent of the amplification power of the machine. Once the crossover components within these loudspeakers start to heat up, there is no telling what is going to take place.

As a result, the majority of professionals would recommend that we choose an active model instead. Many consumers are also forced to assemble the product in a piecemeal fashion and this is not something that will lead to the best possible performance. While the consumer has the freedom to make changes that work for the better, they may also make mistakes that they cannot overcome. The average consumer is simply not able to successfully handle this sort of difficulty.
